Residents of Keswick, Jacksons Point and Sutton invited to contribute ideas to a new book on Georgina,
Keswick, ON: On Saturday, November 28, residents of Keswick, Sutton and Jackson’s Point are invited to join with volunteers from the Alliance for a Better Georgina and mapmaker Jason Anderson to help create maps of their communities. The maps will form chapters of a new book being created on the best of Georgina –what citizens value the most.
The ABG is holding an “Information Bee” at De La Salle Hall, 1940 Metro Rd N., Jackson's Point, Saturday, November 28, 9:30 AM – 2:30 PM.
They are inviting citizens with any information stemming from life in these communities to drop in. Especially important are stories, photos, memories and historical records. Also welcome are ideas for preserving cultural and environmental heritage, favourite places to hike, swim, bird watch etc., and ideas and concerns about the local economy - jobs, growth and future development.Says Annabel Slaight, Vice-Chair of the Alliance for a Better Georgina, “We hope that many residents will come along to take part in this project which will contribute to the future of the Georgina by celebrating its natural features and its past.”
The new”Georgina Atlas and Gazetteer” book will published in a 100-page 12’ x12” atlas format in the summer of 2010 as “something all residents of Georgina can take pride in.”
The Atlas project builds from the ABG’s award-winning community mapping project. Maps of six Georgina communities have already been completed with enthusiastic results. “Our map of Georgina Island is helping us plan for sustainable development of our natural resources,” says the Band Council of Georgina Island. Residents of the historical lakeshore communities are thrilled with their map that now sits alongside world-wide maps recognized by the Environmental Systems Research Institute. Says Mark Setter of Crescent Beach and one of the mapping project and new atlas instigators, “We hope many residents of Keswick, Sutton and Jackson’s Point will join with us to help develop chapters on their communities. We already have wonderful information on other Georgina communities, and we hope to make these remaining areas just as interesting.”
To assist the gathering of information, Mr. Setter notes, “We now are using computers to record photos, stories, ideas, historical records etc. on the spot so that information people bring us can be returned immediately.
"The ABG looks forward to hearing from lots of people who will drop in and join us for an inspiring get together to reminisce and look ahead."
Alongside the information-gathering “Bee” at De La Salle, the ABG is holding a youth forum to get a youth perspective on present and future potential of the Town of Georgina for recreation, employment and green opportunities.
The Alliance for a Better Georgina is a not-for-profit corporation formed in 2002 to increase citizen involvement in developing a brighter future for the Georgina area. Partners in the Georgina Community Mapping and Atlas project are the Rescue Lake Simcoe Coalition, the Town of Georgina and South Lake Community Futures Development Corporation.

''What are the natural features which make a township handsome? a river, with its waterfalls and meadows, a lake, a hill, a cliff or individual rocks, a forest, and ancient trees standing singly. Such things are beautiful; they have a high use which dollars and cents never represent. If inhabitants of a town were wise, they would seek to preserve these things....for such things educate more than any hired teachers or preachers"....H.D. Thoreau. 1861.
